Small bricks really do build big community!
MILUG held our first every LEGO® workshop – Small Bricks Build Big Community – on July 19 at Woodgrove Centre in Nanaimo. And it was a great success! We held two sessions, morning and afternoon, for kids aged 6 to 12. Although the workshops were free, pre-registration was required and both sessions “sold out” in a couple of hours!
MILUG members provided a promotional display the week leading up to the event. It was great to see people enjoying the display and more often then not, asking excitedly, “Is a LEGO® Store coming to Woodgrove?” – Sadly no, but we won’t give up hope that it might happen someday!
The goal of the workshop was to have participants contribute to a giant collaborative community spanning 10.5 by 3.5 feet! MILUG members pre-built the strip of businesses in the centre of the community and workshop participants added their own LEGO® creations around the edge. This made it easier for kids to place their builds into the layout, and to tell us all about their creation during the show and tell at the end of the workshop.
Kids were encouraged to think about things they see in their community and things they want to see that they feel are currently missing. These could be the house they live in or their dream house, a park or playground, a favourite restaurant or shop, or something out of their imagination!
There was tons of creativity and so many great creations. Here are just a few including three that really impressed MILUG members – a wicked design for a floor, a fantastic beach scene, and a super detailed cafe. For photos of all the creations, please check out the album on the MILUG Facebook page.
MILUG members had a blast at our first workshop and we look forward to many more. A huge thank you to Woodgrove Centre for their support in making this event happen. Be sure to check out our events page to see what we’re up to next!
